Gas furnaces

Combustion heat with a flame-proving sequence, venting and a heat exchanger. Failures cluster around ignition components, pressure switches and limit safeties.

Electric furnaces

Resistance elements staged by sequencers on heavy-current circuits. Failures involve elements, relays, breakers and thermal cutouts.

Heat pumps

Refrigerant-based heating suited to mild, damp winters, with defrost cycles and electric auxiliary heat for the coldest stretches.

Hybrid systems

A heat pump paired with a furnace, switching between them based on conditions and control settings. Staging problems are common.

Forced-air distribution

Ducts, plenums, registers and returns. This is where heat is either delivered evenly or lost before it reaches a room.

Thermostats and controls

Mechanical, digital and smart thermostats plus the low-voltage wiring that carries the call for heat to the equipment.

Blower assemblies

Motors, wheels and capacitors. The most airflow complaints and a fair number of noise complaints trace back here.

Ignition and flame proving

Hot-surface ignitors, standing pilots, thermocouples, flame sensors and gas valves that must work in the right order.

Safety controls

High limits, rollout switches, pressure switches and condensate safeties, each designed to stop operation for a specific reason.

Service availability can vary by system. Call with your ZIP code and system type.

How the pieces work together

Diagram of a home heating system showing thermostat, air filter, heat exchanger, blower motor, supply ducts and return air ducts

Whatever generates the heat, the delivery story is the same in a forced-air home. Return ducts pull cooler air back to the equipment. It passes through a filter. It's warmed — across a heat exchanger, over electric elements, or through a heat pump's indoor coil. The blower pushes it into supply ducts, and registers deliver it room by room. Then it comes back and the loop repeats until the thermostat is satisfied.

Reading symptoms against that loop makes them far less mysterious. Cold air from the vents means the heating stage isn't happening while the blower stage is. Weak airflow everywhere points at filter, blower or return. Weak airflow in one room points at the duct serving it. Repeated shutdowns usually mean heat is building faster than air carries it away.

Homeowner FAQ

How do I know what type of heating system I have?
Look at the equipment itself. A gas furnace has a gas line, a flue or plastic vent pipes and a burner compartment with a viewing window. An electric furnace has a heavy electrical feed and no gas line. If there's a unit outside that runs in winter, you likely have a heat pump.
Is a heat pump the same as an air conditioner?
Mechanically they're close cousins, but a heat pump can reverse its cycle to bring heat indoors, while an air conditioner only removes it. That reversing valve is what lets a heat pump heat your home in our mild winters.
What exactly counts as a home heating system?
The equipment that warms your living space: the heat source, the blower that moves air, the thermostat that controls it and the ducts that deliver it. That is the scope of every visit we make.
What's the most common failure across all these systems?
Airflow restriction, by a wide margin. A loaded filter, a dirty blower wheel or blocked ducts push equipment temperatures up, trip safety switches and shorten the life of expensive components — on gas, electric and heat pump systems alike.
